Troubleshooting

Each section says what you will see and what to do. If nothing here helps, collect the details and send them to Kirehb.

The AppImage will not start

What Konflux needs is listed on Install and update. The usual causes:

Nothing happens, or “Permission denied”

The file is not executable yet. In a terminal:

chmod +x ~/Applications/Konflux-Chat-*.AppImage

Use the folder you saved it in. Most file managers can do the same in the file’s properties.

A message about FUSE

An AppImage opens itself with FUSE, through a small helper called fusermount3 or fusermount. Most desktop systems have it. Where it is missing, Konflux does not start, and started from a terminal it says:

Error: No suitable fusermount binary found on the $PATH
Cannot mount AppImage, please check your FUSE setup.

Install FUSE as shown on Install and update: the package is fuse3 on Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and Arch.

The window opens, but the status bar keeps saying the core stopped

The part of Konflux that connects to the chats runs as a separate program inside the AppImage. The status bar calls it the core. When it cannot run, the status bar keeps changing between core stopped (code …) — restarting and restarting the core (attempt …), and no chat ever connects.

It needs glibc 2.34 or newer, and the libdbus and libsystemd libraries. Started from a terminal, the line that starts with [core] names what is missing, such as GLIBC_2.34. To see your glibc version, run ldd --version; the first line ends with it. Ubuntu 20.04, for example, has 2.31, which is too old. There is no way round this in this version: Konflux needs a newer system.

core failed — … means the core could not be started at all. Send Kirehb the words after the dash.

starting the core… for a moment at every start is normal.

Sign-in problems

Reading chat needs no sign-in. Everything below is about sending, moderating, and the features that need an account. The steps themselves are on Accounts and signing in.

No keyring, or a locked keyring

Konflux keeps sign-ins in your system keyring, through the Secret Service: KDE Wallet, GNOME Keyring, or another keyring that offers it. If none is running, or it stays locked:

• Signing in ends with “could not reach the system keyring: …” under the Accounts header.
• A sign-in that worked before shows a notice at the top of the window: “Konflux could not open the system keyring to read your Twitch login (…), so sending, moderating and badges have stopped working there. Unlock the keyring, then restart Konflux. — could not reach the system keyring: …”. The sign-in itself has not expired.
• Saving a Pogly token ends with “Pogly accepted the token, but the system keyring would not keep it: …”.

What to do: make sure your desktop’s keyring is running and unlocked (most unlock when you log in), then restart Konflux so that everything that needs a sign-in asks again. Without a keyring, Konflux still reads every chat, signed out.

Google warns that it has not verified the app

That is expected: Google has not verified Konflux’s Google app yet. The Accounts panel says so under YouTube. Go on past the warning, through its advanced options, to Google’s usual page asking what to allow.

Until the app is verified, Google lets 100 Google accounts sign in to it, in all. If Google refuses your sign-in, tell Kirehb at contact@konflux.app.

Reading YouTube chat never uses your Google sign-in, so it keeps working throughout.

Kick

• The sign-in fails when finishing, or a Kick sign-in stops renewing. Kick’s sign-in is finished and renewed through Konflux’s helper at auth.konflux.app (why). If it cannot be reached, Kick sign-in fails and says why. Reading Kick chat does not use the helper and keeps working. Try again later, and tell Kirehb if it lasts.
• “port 47821 is in use, and this platform registers that exact address: …” Kick sends the browser back to Konflux on one fixed local port, 47821, and another program is using it. Close the other program and try again. An unfinished Kick sign-in of Konflux’s own gives the port back when it gives up, after 5 minutes.

Other sign-in messages

• “the code expired” (Twitch): the code was not approved in time. Click Sign in for a new one.
• “the sign-in was not finished within 5 minutes; start it again” (YouTube, Kick): the browser never came back to Konflux. Click Sign in again.
• “This login predates … permission … Konflux now asks for. Sign out and in again to grant …”: a newer Konflux asks for more. Click sign out, then Sign in.
• The browser tab says “Konflux: the login was refused (…). You can close this tab.”: you declined, or the platform refused. Try again.

The status bar

The full tour is on The window. What each part tells you, and what to do about it:

Platform pills

One pill for each platform with a chat open in any tab. Point at a pill to see each of its chats, one per line, with its state and the reason. Click a pill to open Accounts.

Grey	… · waiting	Nothing is wrong: no chat is connected yet, and at least one waits for its stream. A YouTube channel that is not live waits like this. See No YouTube chat.
Amber	… · reconnecting	The connection dropped. Konflux reconnects by itself, waiting a little longer after each failure. Check your internet connection if it lasts.
Amber	… · ended	A chat has ended. For a YouTube channel that is normal when a broadcast finishes: Konflux waits for the next one, and within a minute the pill says waiting. For Kick it usually means the channel could not be found. Point at the pill for the reason, such as “Kick channel lookup for examplestreamer: HTTP 404 Not Found”, check the name, then close the chat and open it again.
Amber	… · 2 with trouble	Several chats are reconnecting or have ended. Point at the pill.

When you are signed in to Twitch, its pill also names the account, as in Twitch · as examplename: the account chat is read as. With Settings › Platforms › Read Twitch chat as your own account off, chat is read anonymously and the pill names nobody.

Refused feeds

In channels you moderate, Konflux asks Twitch for two extra feeds: the AutoMod feed, with the messages AutoMod holds, and the suspicious-user feed, with the users Twitch flags. When Twitch refuses one, the status bar shows a warning such as AutoMod feed refused in examplestreamer, with — asking again at 14:05 when Konflux will try again by itself. Several read 2 Twitch feeds refused.

Without these feeds, held messages do not reach the Held for review panel and suspicious-user flags do not show. Chat itself is not affected.

Point at the warning for Twitch’s reason:

Where Konflux will not ask again by itself, the reason ends with a sign-in with the moderator permissions, or the moderator role, changes this.

The rest of the status bar

• starting the core…, core stopped (code …) — restarting, restarting the core (attempt …), core failed — …: see The window opens, but the status bar keeps saying the core stopped. After a restart the chats reconnect by themselves. Messages that arrived while the core was down are missing.
• Update … ready — restart: see Update problems.
• sandbox off: see Konflux says its sandbox is off.
• streamer mode off, streamer mode · waits for OBS, or streamer mode · and the reason while it is on: click it to switch streamer mode on or off.

Konflux says its sandbox is off

Konflux draws its window with Chromium, the engine inside Chrome. Chromium keeps each web page in a sandbox, so that a page’s code cannot reach the rest of your computer. The sandbox needs a Linux feature called unprivileged user namespaces, and some systems block it. Ubuntu 24.04 and newer block it by default for programs that do not come from Ubuntu.

Where the sandbox cannot run, Konflux still starts, and:

• the status bar shows sandbox off;
• the three places that show pages from websites are paused: the platform’s own chat (the drawer), Twitch’s card, and Pogly’s editor. Each says so, and offers the same page in your browser instead, which has a sandbox of its own;
• everything else works as usual. That includes Konflux’s own window, with the chat, its emotes and profile pictures: it loads no web pages, but it runs without the sandbox too.

Turn it on, on Ubuntu 24.04 and newer

Ubuntu’s release notes for 24.04 recommend a small AppArmor profile that allows one program to use the feature. This one allows the Konflux AppImage in ~/Applications, the folder that Install and update suggests:

If you keep the file somewhere else, change /home/*/Applications/ to that folder. Then quit Konflux and start it again. When it works, sandbox off is no longer in the status bar.

The profile trusts whatever program is at that path. A program already running as you could put a file there and get the same allowance, which is true of any profile like this one. Keep that folder for Konflux.

This is the fix Ubuntu’s release notes recommend, and it was tried on Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04. If Konflux still says its sandbox is off, tell Kirehb which system you use.

On other systems

If Konflux says its sandbox is off anywhere else, the system blocks user namespaces in another way. Tell Kirehb which system you use.

A YouTube channel shows no chat

It must be live. A YouTube chat belongs to one broadcast, so a channel that is not streaming has no chat. Konflux watches for the stream and checks once a minute. Meanwhile the YouTube pill says waiting, and pointing at it shows “@examplestreamer is not live — waiting for the stream to start”. The chat joins by itself within about a minute of the stream starting. You do not need to reopen anything.

Point at the red YouTube dot in the split’s header. It says “YouTube: live for …, … watching”, “YouTube: not live — any YouTube lines here are from an earlier broadcast”, or “YouTube: could not find out whether it is live”. Lines from an earlier day carry their date.

Use the channel’s @handle, not a video. Open YouTube channels as yt:@examplestreamer or https://www.youtube.com/@examplestreamer. Konflux finds a channel’s live stream through its handle.

• A video link (watch?v=…, youtu.be/…, /live/…) or an 11-character video ID opens that one broadcast only. Once it ends, there is nothing more to read.
• Add streamer refuses a video link and says so: “that is a link to one broadcast. Use the channel — youtube.com/@handle — so the link outlives the stream.”
• If you opened a channel by its channel ID (a youtube.com/channel/UC… link), open it by its @handle instead.

Messages seem to be missing? If Settings › Platforms › YouTube chat view is set to Top chat — YouTube’s selection, YouTube leaves some messages out. The default, Everything said, shows them all.

The native drawer for YouTube opens only while the channel is live: “YouTube’s own chat belongs to a broadcast, so it opens only while the channel is live.”

Update problems

Only an installed AppImage updates itself. How updates work is on Install and update.

When an update has been downloaded and checked, the status bar shows Update … ready — restart. That is the only update message in the status bar. Everything else is in Settings › About, next to Updates:

Refused: …	What the server sent was not signed by Konflux’s key, named no Konflux release, or did not match what was signed. Nothing was installed.	Nothing. Tell Kirehb if it keeps happening.
Could not check: …, Could not download …: …, Could not install …: …	That step failed. The words after the colon say why.	See below.

The commonest reasons after the colon:

• Konflux cannot replace itself in …: the folder is not writable. Move the AppImage to a folder in your home directory, such as ~/Applications.
• … answered …, or a network error: the update server could not be reached, or answered with an error. Click Check now later.
• the download stalled: no data for a minute. Click Check now later.

Also good to know:

• The file keeps its old name after an update, so the version in the file name can be older than the one running. Settings › About shows the version you run, next to Konflux.
• A hidden file ending in .part beside the AppImage is a download that did not finish. It is safe to delete.
• To stop checking, turn off Settings › Advanced › Check for updates. Check now still works.

Collect the details for Kirehb

Save a report. Open Settings › About and press Save a report…. Konflux shows the whole report first: its version and the core’s, your system, what the status bar says about each chat and about updates, and the last lines Konflux printed while it ran, with their times. Read it, then press Save… and choose where the file goes. Konflux sends it nowhere; you send it yourself.

Konflux keeps those last lines in memory only, while it runs, and writes them nowhere unless you save a report. So save the report right after the problem, before you close Konflux.

If Konflux does not start at all, there is nothing to save a report from. Start it from a terminal instead, and keep what it prints:

1. In a terminal, start the AppImage and keep a copy of its output in a file:

   ~/Applications/Konflux-Chat-*.AppImage 2>&1 | tee konflux-output.txt

   Use the folder you saved it in.

2. The output is in konflux-output.txt, in the folder the terminal was in. Lines from the core start with [core].

Also note down:

• the versions in Settings › About: Konflux and Core;
• what the status bar says, and what it shows when you point at it;
• what you did just before, and what you expected to happen.

Read the report, or the output, before you send it. It names the channels you had open and the accounts you use. Konflux is written never to print a token or password, but check anyway.
